Kakavos-Antiope

Like Tzatzalos´ installation Kakavos-Antiope (1999) that contains an image of an exploited mountainside. The exploitation of the mineral clay and volcanic glass resulted in a terrace shaped hole in the centre of the mountain. Like an amphitheatre the mountain now resides in the landscape, unveiled to the eye of the beholder; ready to evoke the experience of shock, beauty and bewildering. Tzatzalos transcends this huge transformation of the landscape into a series of small sized objects. Pieces of sandstone shaped by tidal waves, are used for the making of molds to shape her own artificial resin objects in return: what were once the forms of stones now exist as drops of light catching water in the work of Tzatzalos.

A description of the picture

Water and light are two important presences in the oeuvre of Tzatzalos. With her work in commission Flevo Lacus (1996) she commemorated the land and the history of the province of Flevoland. Intrigued by an aerial photo of a specific polder terrain she translated the visual contours of it into an artificial basin. The basin was, filled with the water from Flevoland, brought into vibration as to simulate the echo of the primal forces of the sea that once ruled there. The basin was situated in a pentagonal building and could be seen through a window pane. Outside of the building a pentagonal shaped console, carrying the aerial image was placed to underline the relation between the original and the constructed elements and between the inside and outside world With a profound fascination for the interactions between the 'in' and the 'out' and between the tactile expressiveness of the materials themselves, Tzatzalos started out her career as an artist. Translating the vine-leaves of the garden of the exposition space (Project in situ, 1992) into an iron framework Tzatzalos links separated environments with one another. Not only do the iron threads form one line from the inside to the outside world also their shadows, caught in the glass object in the centre of the installation, interact with the surroundings.
